## Other donors

There are a number of donors that do not fall into any of the above categories but that are long-standing supporters of media development work.&#x20;

All have a reputation for being approachable, flexible and keeping the administrative burden to a minimum.

## European Endowment for Democracy

The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is an independent, grant-making organization, established in 2013 by the European Union (EU) and EU member states to foster democracy in the European Neighbourhood and beyond.

**Funding focus:** Support to media initiatives remains an important priority for EED: "independent and social media platforms" is one of its nine thematic areas, alongside anti-corruption and public accountability, civic activism, environmental activism, human rights monitoring, women's civic and political participation, inclusion, arts and culture, and youth. Its grant-making is demand-driven and prioritises activities that are difficult to fund elsewhere, including start-up and core support. \
\
EED also runs an emergency funding mechanism. It was set up for Syrian partners after the fall of the Assad government and later extended to organisations affected by the US foreign aid freeze. Between 2020 and 2024, about 19% of EED's grants in the region went to Syrian partners.

**Geographic priorities:** EED works in Eastern Europe and Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, and the Western Balkans and Türkiye.&#x20;

**Funding types:** Programmatic, core and start-up grants; emergency support.

**Funding amount:** Varies by project.&#x20;

**Application information:** "EED grant-making is almost entirely demand-driven, and takes place in an open-ended application and funding cycle." Applications are accepted on a rolling basis in several languages, including English, Arabic, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Serbian and Albanian.&#x20;

## National Democratic Institute

The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

**Funding opportunities:** NDI is not a grant-making organization.  The institute supports democratic institutions and practices in every region of the world. The NDI and its local partners work to promote openness and accountability in government by building political and civic [**organizations**](https://www2.fundsforngos.org/tag/organisations/), safeguarding elections, and promoting citizen participation.
