Authors League Fund

The Authors League Fund helped US-based journalists, critics, essayists, short story writers, and poets with a substantial body of work in periodicals in 2020 with a national or broad circulation. This included regional/local news outlets. Whether print or online, these periodicals must have strong editorial oversight and a sizable readership.

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ)

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) provides rolling Coronavirus Grants for U.S. Freelancers. FIJ’s Board of Directors is looking for stories on the coronavirus that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance, or abuse of power – in the public and private sectors.
FIJ encourages proposals written for ethnic media as well as those submitted by journalists of color and involving the impact of the coronavirus in U.S. ethnic communities. Grants average $5,000 but can be as high as $10,000. They cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel, document collection, and equipment rental. FIJ also considers requests for small stipends.

International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) Emergency Funds

United States Journalism Emergency Fund

The IWMF has partnered with the Craig Newmark Philanthropies to establish the United States Journalism Emergency Fund. This fund will directly support U.S. journalists in need so they can resume work essential to functioning democracy. Made available to U.S. based journalists regardless of gender (including male identifying), these funds will:
  • support journalists with immediate needs related to their professional work, such as medical aid, destroyed or stolen equipment and protective gear;
  • support long-term journalist needs such as trauma, mental health services and referrals to legal support; and,
  • support journalists targeted as a result of their reporting at events related to the highly charged political unrest and polarization in the U.S., including but not limited to elections, civil movements and other challenging environments.

Journalist furlough fund

A group of journalists created a furlough fund for the many, many other journalists who were temporarily laid off or had their hours reduced across the U.S. amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

NewsMatch is a collaboration between newsrooms, funders, and industry experts that is designed to strengthen the fundraising capabilities of nonprofit newsrooms and promote giving to journalism in the U.S. Through NewsMatch, individual donations made to nonprofit newsrooms between November 1 and December 31 are matched by a coalition of national funders.
Since 2016, the campaign has helped raise over $100 million for nonprofit journalism, helping jumpstart small, emerging newsrooms, supporting newsrooms that serve or are led by underrepresented communities, and strengthening mission-based organizations.
